Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) are growing in popularity, but there’s still a lot of confusion surrounding how they work and whether they’re a good fit for your home. Let’s cut through the noise and clear up some common misconceptions.

What is an Air Source Heat Pump? It’s a renewable alternative to fossil fuel and older or traditional on-peak electric heating, and can significantly reduce your home’s carbon footprint. It extracts heat from the outside air—even in cold temperatures—and uses it to warm your home and hot water.

Myth 1: They Don’t Work in Cold Weather Fact: Modern ASHPs are designed to work efficiently even in sub-zero temperatures. In the UK climate, they perform reliably all year round.

Myth 2: They’re Too Expensive Fact: Through schemes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you could get up to £7,500 towards an installation. Plus, with rising energy costs, long-term savings can offset initial investment.

Myth 3: You Need Underfloor Heating Fact: ASHPs work with radiators too. You may need slightly larger radiators, but full underfloor heating isn’t essential.

Myth 4: They’re No Better Than a Modern Boiler Fact: While running costs are similar to a high-efficiency gas boiler, ASHPs dramatically reduce your home’s carbon footprint—and future-proof your heating as we move away from fossil fuels.
