Over the past few years, more households across the UK have started to explore alternatives to traditional gas or oil heating systems. One of the most talked-about options is the air source heat pump.

As the country works towards improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions, heat pumps are becoming an increasingly popular solution for heating homes.

In this blog, we explain what heat pumps are, how they work, and why more homeowners are considering them.

What is an air source heat pump?

An air source heat pump is a heating system that extracts heat from the air outside your home and transfers it indoors to provide heating and hot water.

Even when the weather is cold, there is still heat energy in the air. A heat pump captures this energy and uses electricity to compress and raise the temperature before distributing it through your heating system.

The heat can then be delivered through radiators, underfloor heating, or hot water cylinders in a similar way to a conventional heating system.

You may have seen these systems outside properties — they usually look like a small external unit installed near a wall or garden space.

Why are heat pumps becoming more popular?

There are several reasons why more households are now considering heat pumps.

One of the main factors is efficiency. Unlike traditional boilers that generate heat by burning fuel, heat pumps transfer heat from the environment, which requires significantly less energy.

This means that heat pumps can produce several units of heat for every unit of electricity used, making them a highly efficient heating solution.

Another reason is environmental impact. Heat pumps help reduce reliance on fossil fuels and support the UK's wider goals to lower carbon emissions and transition to cleaner heating technologies.

Government support through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

To support the transition to low-carbon heating, the UK government introduced the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS).

This scheme currently offers homeowners a grant of £7,500 towards the installation of an air source heat pump.

The grant is applied directly to the installation cost through certified installers, helping to reduce the upfront investment required to install the system.

Is a heat pump suitable for every home?

While heat pumps can work well in many properties, every home is different. Factors such as insulation, available space, and heating requirements all play a role in determining whether a heat pump is suitable.

This is why it’s important to get independent advice before making any decisions.

At Home Heating Hub, we provide free, impartial guidance to help homeowners understand their options and identify what heating solutions may work best for their property.

Our aim is simply to ensure households have the information they need to make confident decisions about their home heating.
