Winter storms can bring power cuts, especially in rural areas. Here’s how to stay safe and prepared:
1. Keep torches and spare batteries handy
Avoid using candles as a primary light source. LED torches are safer and longer-lasting.
2. Charge power banks
Having a few charged portable power banks can keep phones going during longer outages.
3. Layer up and stay warm
Multiple thin layers trap heat better than one thick one. Blankets, hot water bottles and hats can help you stay comfortable.
4. Unplug sensitive electronics
If the power flicks on and off, it can damage plugged-in appliances. Unplug during a cut to avoid this.
5. Have non-perishable food ready
Tinned soups, crackers, and bottled water can make life easier if you’re without electricity for a while.
6. Stay informed
Check your local network provider’s website for updates. If you or someone in your household has medical needs, make sure you’re registered for priority services.
