How to Protect Your Property From Ice and Snow This Winter

When the temperature drops, your home can face a number of risks — from burst pipes to roof damage. Here’s how to protect your property through the coldest months:

1. Insulate exposed pipes

Use foam pipe lagging (available at most DIY stores) to cover any pipes in lofts, basements, or outside walls. This can help prevent them from freezing and bursting.

2. Keep gutters and drains clear

Blocked gutters can lead to ice build-up, damaging your roof and brickwork. Clear out leaves and debris before the next freeze.

3. Check your loft insulation

A well-insulated loft keeps warm air in and prevents snow from melting unevenly on your roof, which can cause leaks.

4. Keep heating on low during cold spells

Even if you're away, keeping your heating on a low setting (around 12–15°C) can prevent frozen pipes.

5. Watch out for damp and mould

Condensation can rise in winter. Use extractor fans, open windows for ventilation, and keep furniture away from external walls to reduce moisture build-up.
